senate minority leader harry reid has the task of trying to conjure up something that might be able to pass the house in addition to the senate publicly. the white house is saying they want tax rates to remain in effect for those making up to $250,000 per year, but it's unclear if that's something. very unclear, very unquestioned that house republicans could swallow that. we're hearing aing you significant possibility we go over the fiscal cliff. >> absolutely. both sides are saying that. you play thad sound bite from john baroso, saying it's politically expedestrianent for the president to go off the fiscal cliff. but both sides are saying, you know what? maybe it's better to go off the cliff. politically, members of congress will have to vet on tax cuts as opposed to now which are tax increases which are much harder to take. >> that's right. because the tax hikes will happen whether or not congress acts, so the school of thought here is that if republicans and temp kratz were to allow this just to happen, then they could vote for infect only tax cuts, not be on the record voting for

it's harry reid and the president that have yet to come up with something. if it was so easy, if they thought they had a solution to it, why didn't on friday they come to the table and actually pass something? the pressure is on them, what can they pass in the senate? >> harold, you know the politics of this but you also know the markets and how they've been reacting and wall street and corporate america more generally. is there new pessimism that we're, a, not going to get a deal and not solve the issue anyway? >> big disappointment. people outside of washington understand clearly. a couple hundred billion over ten years separating both sides. the question becomes can washington still govern itself? two, there's a realization we're in the middle of a small recovery. if we find ourselves not able to resolve this moment, it retards and slows and undermines what we see ourselves doing going forward. finally, for the life of me as someone who sfrd there, it was so distressful to watch both sides yell at each other. i feel sorry for speaker boehner. i've seen so

the senate democratic leader harry reid is the one trying to figure out if he can get the votes from enough republicans to pass the kind of scaled back bill that the president himself talked about on friday before he went to hawaii, which is effectively his plan to keep taxes in place, tax cuts in place, i should say, for every household making $250,000 and under and maybe add a few other tax related items, nothing on spending, but tax related items to that, the hope among democrats is that because we are so close to that deadline, that they can get enough republicans in the senate and the house ultimately to pass that, but, you know, the betting, according to sources in the republican and democratic party is still at this point that it is not going to be likely and we're most likely to go off the fiscal cliff. >> six days away. dana, what would majority leader reid have to add to the legislation to peel off just a few republicans, enough to get it through the house? i don't know if he would get widespread support from mitch mcconnell and the leadership, but just a few who are maybe

harry reid said late last night he wondered if there was enough time to get this done. we've known this cliff was coming for months and yet the capitol hill in washington seems to be taking this at the last minute hoping they can throw a hail mary in the last couple of days. they haven't been talking or dealing. the president's apparently going to put forward some kind of a scaled down plan. that is not good news for anybody. >> john, we know we've heard from a florida congresswoman earlier from cnn who talks about there is such gridlock it's very difficult to even imagine how that would be unlocked. i want you to hear what she said. >> it's about scoring political points. i know the american people are tired of that. they're tired of all of us, i understand that. we make used car salesmen look good. that is the on group that's b w below us, but we've got to get our act together and prove to the american people they can regain the trufrt they once had in us and get the job done and as you say, not kick the can down the road. they want us to really work this out. i hope
